This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Hercules Eco Block™ compared to other measures on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Approved Products List and to identify its most effective applications on an active CDOT project.
Kraemer North America installed 3,000 linear feet of Hercules Eco Block™ in a variety of configurations along the I-70 Floyd Hill Project. The blocks were used to manage stormwater in both concentrated and sheet flows and to capture sediment.
During field use, the Eco Block™ proved most effective as a replacement for rock socks, particularly for jersey barrier gap protection, diversions, run-on/runoff controls, area inlet protection, and stockpile perimeter controls. Crews reported that it was also significantly easier to install, remove, and maintain than traditional materials.
After six months of monitoring, the Eco Block™ was found to be less expensive to purchase, install, and maintain than rock socks while performing as well — or better — in controlling sediment and runoff. Although it performed well in other applications, its most cost-effective use on this project was as a rock sock replacement in highway environments.
